The Sports Archives – The World’s Most Inspirational Racing Drivers!

The 5 Most Inspirational Racing Drivers

Professional race car drivers inspire awe in most people as they whip around the track at speeds that would make most people lose their minds. It is not a sport for the faint hearted. There are, however, several professional drivers who have inspired fans on a special level with their accomplishments over the years in unique ways. Here are five of the most inspirational race car drivers.

Alessandro “Alex” Zanardi

Alex ZanardiAs an Italian race car driver, Zanardi had a respectable career with two CART championship titles in the late 1990s. He also participated as a Formula One driver. However in 2001 he suffered a horrific crash that resulted in the amputation of both of his legs. Less than two years after the accident, he returned to racing and competed in the FIA World Touring Car Championship. Even more famously, he switched sports and went into handbiking, which is a type of cycling for the Paralympics. In this sport he won gold and silver medals at the 2012 London Paralympics. He is a wonderful example of perseverance in spite of adversity.

Ayrton Senna da Silva

Ayrton Senna da SilvaSadly, Senna was the last driver fatality in Formula One when he was killed in an accident during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix, but his legend lives on and continues to inspire many, especially in his native Brazil. Senna made his Formula One debut in 1984, and he won three Formula One world championships during his career. He is popularly considered one of the greatest Formula One drivers in the history of the sport. He also was victorious during the Monaco Grand Prix six times, which continues to be a record. The sheer number of his accomplishments is extraordinary and warrants him mention.

Michael Schumacher

Michael SchumacherThis German race car driver is also popularly regarded as one of the best drivers in Formula One history and statistically is one of the best the entire sport has ever known. He holds numerous records including the most number of championships, points scored, victories within a single season, fastest laps, race victories, and more. In 2002 he gained notoriety for finishing in the top three in every race of the season (and thus gaining the most consecutive podium finishes), the only driver in Formula One history to have done so. He is also known for his involvement with various charities and donations millions of dollars. He is another example of what can be accomplished with the incredible intersection of talent and hard work.

Danica Patrick

Danica Patrick 2009 Indy 500 Pole DayOne of the most famous names in racing, even among people who do not follow the sport, Patrick has carved a name for herself as the most successful woman in the sport. She is the only woman to have ever won a race in the IndyCar series, and placed third at the Indianapolis 500, which was the highest finish by a woman. She won a NASCAR Spring Cup Series pole as well, the first female NASCAR driver to have done so. She has also been the fastest pole qualifier to successfully qualify for the Daytona 500 since 1990. She is inspirational because of her ability to overcome stereotypes and compete on a level that previously no woman had successfully achieved.

Lewis Carl Davidson Hamilton

Lewis HamiltonThis British Formula One driver was the youngest to ever sign a contract that resulted in a Formula One drive in 2007. He is also considered the first black driver in the Formula One series, and was the first black driver to win any major race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He is the holder of numerous records, and finished second in the 2007 Formula One Championship, but went on to win the World Championship the next year. He accomplishments at such a young age as well as being a trailblazer in the sport for people of different ethnic backgrounds are two great reasons to be inspired by this young Brit.

Each sport produces athletes and competitors which offer fans and the rest of the population someone to admire. They overcome adversity, achieve amazing goals, and persevere even when the cards seem stacked against them. Race car driving is no different. These five competitors have inspired many who follow the sport of racing around the world.

The Sports Archives – 10 Most Lucrative Sports Shirt Sponsorship Deals Of All Time!

These are the top ten most lucrative shirt sponsorship deals associated with sports teams:

1. Manchester United – £45 million a year (Chevrolet)

Money Soccer BallManchester United top this list with a shirt sponsorship deal that will take effect in 2014/2015. This deal was agreed with Chevrolet in the summer of 2012, and will benefit United to the tune of 45 million pounds a year. This deal dwarves their previous shirt sponsorship deal with AON.

While this deal should be a success for both parties, there is controversy attached to it. The man at Chevrolet who agreed the contract with Manchester United lost his job a week later.

2. Barcelona – £25 million a year (Qatar Foundation)

After spending years avoiding shirt sponsorship deals, Barcelona finally realized that they needed the money. A whopping 25 million pounds a year deal was agreed with the Qatar Foundation in 2011. This deal will help the Catalan club cement their place at the pinnacle of world soccer.

3. Bayern Munich – £23.6 million a year (Turk Telecom)

Bayern are one of Europe’s most successful and revered teams. In 2011, they agreed a shirt sponsorship deal that fit with that image. Their deal may only be third on this list, but it is immense compared to sponsorship deals for other German teams.

4. Manchester United – £20m-a-year (Aon)

This is the English side’s second appearance on this list. After AIG collapsed during the financial meltdown in the United States, Manchester United were left to look for a new sponsor. Their search did not take long, as another American insurance mogul stepped up to the plate. Aon agreed a mammoth deal with the Red Devils that should run until the end of the 2013/2014 season.

5. Liverpool – £20 million a year (Standard Chartered)

Liverpool might not be the force that they once were, but their commercial success has not dwindled in the past 20 years. They are one of the most popular teams in the world, particularly in Asia. Standard Chartered looked to take advantage of this popularity when a 20 million a year deal was agreed with the Merseyside giants. Ironically, Standard Chartered owned Liverpool for close to a year, before selling the club to the Fenway Sports Group in Boston.

6. Manchester City – £20m-a-year (Etihad Airways)

Manchester City have gone from relegation regulars to the cream of the crop in the past five years. Their sponsorship deal with Etihad Airways is part of a wider package, which includes the naming rights for the “City of Manchester Stadium”.

7. Sunderland – £20m-a-year (Invest in Africa)

Sunderland are a surprise entry to this list. The team is well supported in England, but they do not have a huge worldwide following. No doubt, their American owner played a part in securing this sponsorship deal.

8. Real Madrid – £16.8 million a year (Bwin)

As the biggest soccer team in the world, it is a slight surprise to find Real Madrid so far down on this list. It would not be a surprise if they agree a mammoth deal with a new company in the future.

9. Chelsea – £13.8 million a year (Samsung)

Chelsea have been associated with the iconic electronics company for a number of years.

10. AC Milan – £10 million a year (Emirates)

The financial pull of Italian clubs is not what it once was, but AC Milan still managed to pull off an impressive sponsorship deal with Emirates.

The Sports Archives – Tracing The Origins Of The Modern Rugby Boot!

Rugby BootWhen it comes to footwear, the kaleidoscopic range of colours and myriad of shapes that are available to Rugby players today means that you’d be forgiven for thinking that a typical game is as much of a fashion show as a sporting event.

While it may be true that modern manufacturers are catering to the scrum-loving fashionistas out there, they are also spending a lot of time and money to develop ever more advanced performance footwear that is carefully designed to improve a player’s level of comfort and stability, reduce injuries and even gather and provide performance data via handy built-in electronic devices.

Whilst nobody can deny that modern rugby boots are some pretty fancy bits of kit, you can get a really good picture of how much things have advanced by tracing the development of this highly specialised variety of sports footwear.

The Early Days

Rugby football evolved from a tradition going back hundreds of years.  The game as it was back then was a much more violent affair, where laws had to be written to specifically prevent players from attaching metallic components to their footwear in order to make their ‘hacking’ inflict maximal damage.

Aside from the rules that were written to protect players from vicious shin attacks, there were no real guidelines as to what players could and couldn’t wear on their feet and as such, early competitors would wear whatever they felt most comfortable in.

The Emergence of Specialist Rugby Footwear

As the sport of Rugby evolved, so too did the equipment which players would wear to improve their game.  The first specialist boots were fitted with bars or studs to provide greater traction and increased stability in all weathers, but these features, combined with the heavy weight of the boots, made them cumbersome by today’s standards.

Over the years, one of the top priorities of sportswear manufacturers was to make their products more lightweight, without sacrificing on support;  something that was easier said than done without today’s high-tech materials.

By the latter half of the 20th Century, leather studs would soon be replaced by increasingly lighter, stronger screw-in units fashioned from steel and exotic alloys, heavy leather uppers and the traditional ‘boot’ shape were rendered obsolete by lightweight synthetics and a style which was fine-tuned to the modern game.

Today’s rugby boots are filled with technology, along with lighter weight materials and improved ergonomics, each manufacturer strives to produce the ‘ultimate’ boot for today’s discerning players.   As such, one can only wonder what rugby players of the future will be wearing on their feet!

The Sports Archives – Playing In The Mud!

Mud Bogging

The idea of playing in the mud is something that has entertained many of us since we were young children. While we may have been punished or even grounded for getting dirty back then, the picture is much brighter as we get older. Young adults and those who enjoy the feeling of getting dirty while participating in outdoor activities can now turn to the sport of mudding as a release.

What is mudding?

Mudding is known by several different names depending on where you are located. You may have also heard the terms mud bogging, mud slinging or mud racing.

Who can compete?

Mudding is a sport open to anyone who likes to get dirty. As long as you are legally able to operate your chosen vehicle, the course is open to you. Men and women are both welcome to join.

Motorcycle MuddingWhat equipment do I need to compete?

The equipment required for you to compete is largely dependent upon what type of vehicle you will be using.

If you are using All Terrain Vehicles, your list will include ATV mud tires. You will also need a snorkel kit especially if you plan on running in deeper mud or water. A winch is also another good investment.

If getting your truck dirty is your ultimate goal, then keep these items in mind as you prepare.  You will need to lift your truck. You will also need to purchase mud tires, as well as a roll cage to ensure your safety.

Mudding for fun

Mudding is one sport that does not always need to be approached from a competitive prospective. Instead, you can enjoy it just for fun by yourself or with family and friends.  When mudding for fun, the same equipment list as above will apply to your vehicle. However, the location of this event does not need to be a sanctioned track, but rather just about anywhere you can think of.

Note: If you have any doubts about having access to the property you intend to go mudding on, contact the owner to ensure that you have permission prior to setting off on your adventure.

Mudding for competition

Competitive mud racing can be fun for drivers and spectators alike. Check your local paper or contact your local track to inquire about the time and date of the next event.

Mudding is a sport that everyone can enjoy. In order to make sure you put your best out there, consider using Dodge auto parts on your vehicle of choice.

The Sports Archives – Tips On Perfecting Your Golf Swing!

Golf Tee ShotThere may be no such thing as the perfectly maneuvered golf swing that works for everyone, but all swings contain some common fundamentals. The basics for a good golf swing all include posture, setup, grip, aim, and swing. Before you get frustrated about your golf game there are a variety of tips on perfecting your swing that you can use to significantly improve your golf swing.

Posture, posture, posture

How you hold your body is the first step in having a good golf swing, locking your knees or even stiffing your back can cause your swing to become untracked and lose their rhythm leading to unplanned golf ball landings or in frustrating times, a missed ball just lying there in front of you.

A good posture starts with your feet about shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent, hips push back a bit while you are bent forward with a straight back and neck, holding your golf club with relaxed arms in a good grip. This way you can turn at the hips and slight move your knees effortlessly for power when you are following through your swing. Each person has their slight different stance, some may bend an inch or two more than others and some may keep their feet a bit more apart but as you practice, you can perfect your posture to fit your needs.

Use your body

Any regular golfer knows that they do not use their arms to propel the ball, as you swing your golf club, your turn your torso putting the power of your body behind the shot and getting your ball into the air where you want it on a regular basis. Practice this by swinging with taking a back swing first; if you have trouble getting the ball into the air then you know that you are trying to use your arms rather than your body to power your swing.

Hold your club properly

Anyone can just snatch up a club and hit at a golf ball, but if you want to control where your ball goes then you need to have control of your club. Keeps a natural hand position with your thumb pointing down; your other hand should be below your lead hand as a basic guide. Remember the lower your hands are on the club, the lower your ball will fly, this means your ball won’t fly high but will be easier to control.

Avoid the flips

An early release of your swing causing your golf club to lag is considered “flippiness“. This usually only occurs when your body gets to far ahead of the ball during your swing and your wrists try to come together to control the swing and make sure you hit the ball, but this causes your ball to fly in the wrong direction. Practicing your posture will help prevent flippiness, but if you need additional help, try using a stuffed impact bag as a target and practicing your swing keeping your wrist in the right positions the entire time.

The Sports Archives – The History Of Fencing!

Where did the sport all begin and how did it get to where it is today?

FencingMany people would be surprised to find that fencing dates back to the time of the Ancient Egyptians, which we know because the earliest evidence of the sport comes from a carving found in the country from around 1200 BC. The carving shows something similar to modern fencing, with two individuals engaged in a bout with protective masks, protected weapon tips and judges observing the scene.

Furthermore, evidence of the sport has been found in other ancient civilizations, particularly within the Roman and Greek societies. Most followers of history will know that both the ancient Greeks and Romans were sophisticated in terms of their standard of living, so it is unsurprising that they had a version of fencing that is recognisable to modern fencing practices. Historical sources show that instead of the light rapiers used today, the Greeks and Romans preferred to use a mixture of short swords and lightweight spears. Their ‘fencing’ was called ludi, which basically referred to the swordplay taught in schools and to warrior students.

Unfortunately, with the collapse of the Greek and Roman empires came the decline of a sport that we could see as being recognisable as fencing. Broadswords and heavy weapons became the norm during the Dark Ages and so were unsuited for the more barbarian style of living and fighting experienced during this time.

Camillo Agrippa

Camillo Agrippa

The sport came back into fashion in the 15th Century and it is during this time that the real beginnings of modern fencing began. The Spanish were mostly responsible for being at the heart of modern fencing and two manuals were published there during the 1400s. Nevertheless, it was really in Italy that more extensive use of the rapier weapon began and prolific fencing figures like Camillo Agrippa, Giacomo di Grassi and Vigiani invented some of the iconic moves. These included the lunge move as well as the four different stances commonly used within the sport. Fencing then progressed throughout the centuries, with dueling becoming something that noblemen engaged in. There were significant developments throughout the late 20th century, particularly in the realm of different fencing swords and rapiers. Another notable development was in 1780, when the iconic fencing mask was invented by La Boessiere, who was a French fencing master.

Today, fencing is practiced on an international scale, with the sport frequently featuring in the Olympic Games. It is also a hobby that is practiced across the country. Fencing clubs have become increasingly popular throughout Britain and there are also more exclusive places that offer the more traditional fencing experience, like the Lansdowne Club. This is a private members club in London that houses the London Fencing club.

The Sports Archives – Getting Fit by Playing Indoor Football (Soccer)!

Indoor Soccer Singapore

What’s standing in between you and getting fit? Nothing really, unless it’s just your motivation. That in itself can be a very hard thing to get around. But what if getting fit was really enjoyable? Surely that would eliminate all barriers between you and the very best physical condition you could be in. Well, how on earth could getting fit be enjoyable, let alone fun? That’s easy, indoor soccer, or futsal!

Indoor soccer is a variation of football (soccer) played inside on floors made of wood or some artificial material. Indoor soccer has been around for years and was played in the early 1900’s mostly in Brazil and Uruguay, where outdoor fields where not always available. Presently, there are many amateur, collegiate and professional leagues in the United States, Canada and Mexico. In Brazil, indoor football is known as showbol. Other variants of the sport, such as futsal and five-a-side football, are popular in South America, Australia and Portugal. The rules and penalties of indoor football vary across the different flavors of the sport, however, most variants do not enforce the off-sides rule.

Playing indoor soccer once or twice a week will increase your cardiovascular fitness a lot, it will also give you a muscular work out and burn calories. It’s a very physical game, so you won’t have any choice to jump around and move your body. It’s so much fun as well! It’s competitive, quick, and engaging. By the time you’re halfway through a game, you’ll suddenly realise that you’ve been doing a really strenuous work out without even noticing.

Join a league and play a full season, so that you play continuously. Futsal is indoors, so it can be played all year round and you don’t have to be dormant for part of the year. There are many indoor soccer and futsal venues around the place, like Aussie indoor sports for instance. Aerobic endurance is so important to your all-round fitness, and can so easily be neglected. Don’t let your physical condition slump from inattention, try to do something aerobic every day, no matter what it is. It will pay off in the long run.

The Sports Archives – Preview Of The Upcoming 2013 Motocross Season!

motorcyclist jumping his bikeThe sport of motocross is an adrenaline rush for racers and spectators alike. Originating in the U.S. in the 1960s, motocross has come a long way from its humble beginnings. Now the sport is enjoyed around the world, as fans have fallen in love with the high speeds and amazing aerial maneuvers displayed by professional motocross riders. Though the U.S. is still the epicenter of the sport and draws the best riders from around the world, it is now a global sport with events held almost everywhere. Here is a rundown of the biggest motocross events of the 2013 season.

AMA Supercross

Supercross is the most popular of all motocross racing. Every year, the world’s best riders meet at stadiums across the U.S. to tackle the most challenging racing courses the world has to offer. Thousands of spectators fill baseball and football stadiums to watch their favorite riders fly through the air and compete in bar-to-bar motorcycle action.

The Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series starts out West in California each and every year. Though Anaheim hosts three Monster Energy Supercross Series races each year, the most famous Supercross race takes place at the famous Daytona Speedway. As the only Supercross race to not take place in a traditional stadium, the Daytona Supercross is held in the infield of the gigantic Daytona oval. The additional seating provided by the Daytona Speedway comes in handy, as thousands of Bike Week tourists flock to the grandstands to catch a glimpse of the exciting action.

AMA Nationals

The AMA (American Motorcycle Association) National Motocross Series is the pinnacle of motocross racing. The racing series starts almost immediately after the AMA Supercross Series wraps up in the beginning of May. Similar to Supercross, the AMA Nationals start out West with the California tracks and makes its way east every weekend. With the world’s best motocross racers participating in every race, no one race is more significant than the other. However, since southern California is the birthplace of the sport, the California races draw the most diehard fans of the sport.

Motocross des Nations

Since the very beginnings of the sport, the Motocross des Nations has been the most significant motocross race each year. Unlike other motocross events, the Motocross des Nations is a team event where the best racers from countries around the world compete against each other in each motocross class for national pride. From the inception of the sport, the U.S. has consistently produced the best riders. However, Belgium and France have given the U.S. riders a run for their money on more than one occasion.

Ricky Carmichael May 2007

Ricky Carmichael, May 2007

It is not yet clear who will participate in the 2013 Motocross des Nations or where exactly it will be held. Taking place in the fall, after the completion of the 2013 racing season, everyone must wait until the racing season wraps up before determining who this year’s racers will be. U.S. fans of the sport are clamoring for the opportunity to cheer on their favorite riders on U.S. soil, but time will tell how this year’s event will unfold.

Motocross is without a doubt the most exciting sport on the planet. Professional motocross events take place around the globe, but the U.S. is home to the world’s best riders and hosts the biggest races in the industry. This year’s motocross events are shaping up to be more exciting than ever before, so check your calendars and get ready for some exhilarating motocross action.
