The Sports Archives – Oddball Sports Of New York City – Freak Or Unique?

Madison Square GardenWhen it comes to sport, ‘each to his own’ so the saying goes, but whilst many of us think of sport as Major League Baseball or NFL, you’ll find a lot stranger goings on in the Big Apple. From bull riders to big eaters right through to the Gotham Girls Roller Derby you’ll find them all in NYC. Here we take a look at NYC’s weird and wonderful ‘sports’ and leave you to decide…

Professional Bull Riders (PBR)

What?  A bull riding competition in the heart of Manhattan? Are you crazy? Yep, as crazy as it might seem, each year the city sees 700 tons of dirt lining the arena floor and an excitable crowd cheering on the bull riders as they do everything they can possibly do to stay on top of a bucking 2,000 lb bull for 8 seconds or more. Points are awarded for control, body position and style of riding.

Where?  Madison Square Garden

Why?  Professional riders like Luke Snyder can earn over a $1 million in their bull riding career. With large-scale pyrotechnics and rock music it’s more like a rock concert than a sport but it’s a whole lotta fun to watch.

The Sports Archives – Candlestick Park: Home Of The San Francisco 49ers!

Candlestick Park Home of the San Francisco 49ers

The Bay Area in California is home to dozens of world-class attractions. Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and the San Francisco Cable Cars are all at the top of any tourist to-do list. But sports fans who happen to be in Northern California should reserve time to attend a San Francisco 49ers game at Candlestick Park.

Whether you have been to the Park or not, do yourself a favor and make it happen one last time. As the team is scheduled to move into a new home stadium for the 2014 season, this year is the last time fans will be able to watch NFL football at Candlestick Park.

Candlestick Park is located in the Hunters Point/Bayview area—the SE part of San Francisco—on 602 Jamestown Avenue. One of many points to the structure is that it survived the 1989 earthquake—7.1 on the Richter Scale—with no injuries. Although minor structural damage to the building did occur from the large quake, repairs and renovations quickly stabilized the structure and prevented any costly destruction.

The Sports Archives – Preparing To Go Whitewater Rafting In 2014!

White Water Kayaking and RaftingThe path of least resistance offers little in return for navigating it successfully. It is for that reason we steer purposely into the roughest waters possible. As that’s the only place to find anything of value, that being simply a challenge. –Damien S. Wilhelmi

Winter is upon us and like most other outdoor enthusiasts generally do this time of year, I am enjoying the cold weather as best I can. Snowboarding, snowshoeing, and making the oh-so infamous snow angel wherever the imprint seems suitable. However, no matter how much I am able to enjoy the snow my mind always wanders toward the coming spring. When the snow melts, the rivers rage, and I can set my raft in to huck a little rubber over their rolling and rambunctious rapids.

But as year after year has taught me, not everyone shares this rafting enthusiasm and it seems to be due to the sole reason that most people don’t know where to start. Yes it can be dangerous and there are a number of points you must cover to ensure the trip has a chance of being completed successfully. But every danger in this world can be mitigated through proper understanding, planning, and preparation. It is with those points in mind that every outdoor trip should be conjured up.

The Sports Archives – Charter Fishing: It’s Not Just For The Boys Anymore!

Since the age of dinosaurs man has divided his time up into two activities:

  1. Fishing.
  2. Convincing his wife or girlfriend to let him go fishing.

But modern times have brought about a new reality for the fisherman who just can’t stay out of the water. Instead of fighting with your better half, why not employ a more intelligent approach. Get her hooked! I can hear the objections popping up like mole hills in my front yard: she won’t like it, fishing is my “boys” time, I tried to take her fishing but she hated it…the list goes on and on.

Let me squash some of these outdated excuses.

1.  She won’t like it. Really? How do you know? Have you ever offered to take her fishing with you? The truth is that more and more women not only enjoy fishing but are falling as deeply and madly in love with it as you have.

Woman with dolphin catch

Think about it…there was a time that women supposedly didn’t like football either, but come Sunday your wife is screaming at the television and smashing beer cans on her head just like the rest of your barbarian friends. So give her a chance before you unjustly assume that she won’t catch the fishing bug. Now, if you want to up your chances that she’ll enjoy herself on the first go, don’t invite her to join you in Bubba’s Bass Derby on Lake Stinky. Show her the crème de la crème of fishing experiences and take her to someplace like Key West for a true deep sea boat adventure. Check out the photos from Charter Boat Row or any other saltwater charter online and you’ll find lots of photos of women holding up their trophies for display. And we’re talking girlie girls, too!

The Sports Archives – History Of Curling!

Overall view of the Tim Hortons Brier venue, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Curling, sometimes referred to as the ‘roaring game’, which comes from the noise a curling rock makes when moving on the ice. It’s not clear where the game originates from but it’s known for being one of the oldest team sports. A 16th-century painting by a Flemish artist shows a game which looks a lot like curling. It’s considered that perhaps curling used to be a simple time-killer and people threw stones on ice, making use of the cold winter. But then it developed to being the oldest and one of the most appreciated team sports. These days there is a World Curling Championship which has many followers and attracts a big audience of viewers.

Rules

The rules of this sport were officially drawn in 1804 and strangely, they haven’t quite changed ever since. There are only a few small exceptions. In curling, there are two teams of four players. Each team slides a curling rock on ice towards a target at the other end of the ice field. Every team aims to get more stones as close as they can to the centre of the target. Once 16 stones have been played, the score is counted, according to the location of the rocks. Every stone that is closer to the centre than the one of the other team, brings one point.
