The Sports Archives – Want to Get in Shape? Try One of These Martial Arts!

Do you need to get in shape but you hate the idea of going to the gym several days a week to lift weights or participate in aerobics classes? Do you want to be stronger while also being more flexible and agile so that you can protect yourself and your loved ones against attackers? You should consider signing up for a martial arts class. With so many different forms of martial arts, you can choose the one that appeals to you, and certain schools are perfect for getting in shape fast.

Taekwondo

taekwondoFor those who want to build up their speed in addition to their muscular strength, Taekwondo is the best form of martial arts. You’ll learn how to deliver hard punches and kicks, so there’s emphasis on building up your balance. Once you begin to develop better balance and more strength behind movements, you’ll notice that your coordination dramatically improves as well. Don’t be surprised if you see a heavy bag hanging from your Taekwondo facility’s ceiling either, as you’ll be using it quite a bit to build up your muscles.

Judo

Because there’s significant focus on grappling in judo, you’ll need to strengthen both your upper and lower body in order to win a fight. This form of martial arts was created by Jigoro Kano in 1882. Although judo is quite similar to Taekwondo, the major difference between the two schools is the length of their matches. Because judo matches are much longer, the classes focus on building your strength as well as your endurance.

The Sports Archives – Most Expensive Golf Courses In America!

Ranking golf courses can be difficult, but using the price tag is often a great way to differentiate decent courses from excellent ones. The country’s most prestigious and high quality courses are often the most expensive ones. The luxury that is on evidence comes at a steep price, but they are often worth it. These courses are aesthetically beautiful, come with challenging but enjoyable courses, and have amenities that are unrivaled anywhere else. Here is a look at the top five most expensive courses in the United States.

1. Shadow Creek – Las Vegas

Shadow Creek is a beautifully sculpted course in Las Vegas, Nevada. The course was created by world-famous architect Tom Fazio, who was given a nearly unlimited budget to build the most adventurous and attractive course around.

The Shadow Creek experience starts off with a reservation at the MGM Resort, where you will be relaxing during your stay. From that resort, you will have complete limousine service to the golf course. You can make multiple appointments for the day – just ensure that you schedule them at least 24 hours in advance. You will have an individual caddie who goes to the course with you, and advises you on how to play each hole.

The Sports Archives – M&T Bank Stadium: Home Of The Baltimore Ravens!

Tenniel - The RavenOnly one stadium in the National Football League hosts a home team that gets its name from a well-known Gothic writer. We see evidence of the unusual name in a famous poem with homage to the team’s energy soaring through the air. Edgar Allen Poe lived in Baltimore in the early 1800s and remains one of the most famous people to have called Baltimore home. His poem, The Raven, was the genesis of the nickname of the city’s NFL franchise. The Baltimore Ravens have a unique nickname to match their unique stadium: M&T Bank Stadium in the heart of Baltimore.

The stadium opened in 1998 with a sellout crowd of over 71,000 enthusiastic fans witnessing the first game between the Ravens and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Back then, the facility was called Ravens Stadium at Camden Yards, the latter due to its location in the Camden Yards Sports Complex. One year later PSINet purchased the naming rights for three years, after which it reverted back to Ravens Stadium. Finally in 2003 the M&T Bank Corporation purchased the long-term naming rights for the Ravens’ home field and have held the stadium name ever since.

M&T Bank Stadium was originally built with a maximum seated capacity of just over 68,000 fans. Several thousand more fans were allowed into the building via standing-room only areas and interior lounges. Gradual renovations over the years have increased the maximum seating capacity to in excess of 71,000 total fans. The official seating chart for M&T Bank Stadium shows five total levels of seating with the middle three occupied by high-end club and suite sections.

The Sports Archives – Equipment Used In Hockey!

Hockey players use many different types of equipment, both to facilitate game play and to protect themselves. In this article you will find a list of all the equipment used in ice hockey with some brief details regarding their purpose in the game.

  • Pucks:

Pucks in hockey serve the same purpose that a ball does in other games. They are small in size and are disc shaped. Pucks are commonly made from vulcanized rubber and it’s a common practice to freeze the pucks before a game, this is done to reduce bouncing. They are usually colored black to increase their visibility on a white ice surface.

The Sports Archives – How do Sports Players Get Their Number?

Ask professional athletes and sports fanatics, and they will tell you that numbers are a big deal. For some, a number is just a number, but for athletes they hold special meaning. For example, if Boston heavy hitter Carl Yastrzemski’s number 8 is turned sideways, it resembles the symbol for infinity. Some thought this explained, in part, his extraordinary skill. So how do the athletes get their numbers, and what happens to the numbers when they’re finished with them?

Baseball

Branch Rickey

Branch Rickey

The first photographic evidence of numbers being used in baseball is in a 1909 photograph of Cuban pitching star Jose Mendez. He wore the number 12 on his sleeve. The Cleveland Indians became the first major league team to try uniform numbers in a similar fashion to those being used in hockey and football. It lasted only a short time, and a brief attempt the following year was unsuccessful. In 1923, St. Louis Cardinals manager, Branch Rickey, tried uniform numbers. People across the country ridiculed his efforts. It was not until the mid 1930s that major league baseball made uniform numbers uniform.

Now, depending upon availability, major league baseball players choose their own numbers. If the number happens to be unavailable, players are not above wheeling and dealing to get the number they want. Rickey Henderson paid Toronto’s Turner Ward $25,000 for rights to the number 24, and Roger Clemens gave Carlos Delgado of the Blue Jays a $15,000 Rolex watch in order wear the number 21. The deals made to procure preferred numbers sometimes take strange turns. In 1991 relief pitcher Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams traded Phillies John Kruk two cases of beer for the number 28. When Carlton Fisk moved from Boston to Chicago, he couldn’t get the number 27, so he played with the number 72 to symbolize a turn around in his career.

The Sports Archives – Women Do Have A Place In Sports Broadcasting!

English commentators Eddie Hemmings and Mike Stephenson - Parramatta Stadium RLWC 2008.Daily Mail columnist Brian Viner has caused a storm by calling female sports broadcasters blonde bimbos and asserting that they have been chosen only to attract a female audience. According to Viner, female presenters are not qualified for the job and are only hired for their looks. As a female sports fan I am horrified by his comments as I have long bemoaned the absence of women in the world of professional football. Viner probably thinks I have no right to follow the sport.

A Man’s World

Little wonder than women have found it so hard to break through both in football and football journalism. This is a world which is dominated by men and many of them clearly still believe that the females of the species are incapable of understanding 22 men kicking a ball around a bit of grass. Just look at the comments of Andy Gray and Richard Keys in that infamous commentary when they were criticising female referee’s assistant Sian Massey. They had thought that their microphones were switched off but that doesn’t excuse the sentiment.

The joke that women cannot understand the offside rule is a rather old one but clearly hasn’t had its day. As it turned out Massey’s decision had been right and the two broadcasters were fired but you have to know there are plenty of men in the business who think the same way.

“Tae Bo” creator, Billy Blanks holds a class for service members and their dependents on his famous roll boxing Tae Bo techniques.

The Tae Bo exercise regimen has been around for several decades now. It was first devised by Billy Blanks in 1975. What is Tae Bo? Tae Bo (Total Awareness Excellent Body Obedience) is a combination of many things, actually. It is a mixture of martial arts moves, kickboxing, and dance aerobics just to name a few. Set with a lively music as background, Tae Bo is a fun full body workout that will entice anybody to move their body and simply exercise.

These days, with the advent of many new exercise programs popping out everywhere, you might be thinking that Tae Bo is already obsolete. Think again. One could say that Tae Bo is one of the fore fathers when it comes to dance workouts with a twist. Until this day, there are still many Tae Bo fanatics that would attest to the awesome benefits of Tae Bo. Let’s name a few here:

The Sports Archives – Golf in 2013: A Year in Review!

What a year! December is here and 2013 is almost over, and with it another exciting and unexpected year of golf. Golf is always full of ups and downs, unanticipated surprises, and of course, drama. This year was no different, so we decided to take a look back, and review the 2013 year in golf.

Major Upsets

The four crowning tournaments of the golf calendar are all notoriously difficult to predict. However, that does not mean that we don’t usually have quite a good idea of which golfers will be picking up the titles and which won’t, and who is in form and who isn’t. Each major brought with it a winner who, while still deserving, was unexpected in his own right. Perhaps much of the surprise was due to the fact that a certain in-form, number-one-ranked American failed to win any of them.

Adam Scott - 2013 Masters Winner

Adam Scott – 2013 Masters Winner

Adam Scott — It’s always a surprise when a non-American wins the Masters, and if you had to pick someone who would do it this year, it’s fair to say that few people would have chosen Adam Scott. Winning one for the Aussies, Scott triumphed in one of the most exciting Masters in recent memory, pulling off a 15-foot putt in the dying hours of a tense playoff against Angel Cabrera at Augusta.

Justin Rose — If you had asked just about anyone which British golfer would take home a major this year, you can bet that few people would have given any answer other than Rory McIlroy. However, it was the Englishman Justin Rose, with his first major, who grabbed the headlines — and the winnings — at the US Open.

Phil Mickelson — Of course, it can never really be counted as a “surprise” when lefty takes home another major, but if there was one that could shock us, it was winning the claret jug at this year’s British Open — his first.

Jason Dufner — Another first for the last major of the year, and this time it was Jason Dufner, the guy whose only previous claim to fame was leaning against a wall.

The Sports Archives – The Road to the BCS Championship game!

When: Jan 6th, 2014 at 8:30pm ET

Where: Rose Bowl – Pasadena, CA

Broadcast: ESPN / Musburger and Herbstreit with the call

In Person: BCS Championship Tickets

 photo BCS_Championship_zps45138f32.jpg

Unlike last year’s BCS Championship game, this one will be a thrilling game and both teams will have their hands full for a full 4 quarters. You have a Cinderella type story with the Auburn Tigers as they started the season unranked and have made it through some of wildest finishes in college football history. On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Florida State Seminoles taking the season by the throat and dominating everyone with their juggernaut powered defense. Let’s take a quick look at how these two powerhouses got to the big game.

Florida State Seminoles: 13-0

Head Coach: Jimbo Fisher (4th year)

The AP, ranked Florida State #10 to start the season and then steadily moved up from #10, #8, #6, #5, #3, #2, and to #1 solidifying their spot in the BCS Championship game. The Seminoles faced five ranked teams and blew them all out for a combined score of 254-41; those are some pretty impressive numbers versus ranked opponents. If you want to pass the ball against the Seminoles you better have a “plan b” because their stingy pass defense is ranked #1 and #3 overall in the FBS.

When looking at their schedule, the scoring numbers are quite stunning. The Seminoles average score is 53 and their opponent’s average score is just 11.
