The Sports Archives History Lesson – Beer and Whiskey League!

When one thinks of baseball, one also has to think of Sunday afternoons full of beer, hot dogs and peanuts.  But did you know that there was a time when baseball was banned on Sundays and that beer could not be sold at the games?

Baseball in the 1870s

Baseball in the 1870s

In 1880, the National League expelled Cincinnati for refusing to comply to the ban of Sunday baseball and beer sales.  This prompted some owners to start their own league.  (If you can’t join ’em, then beat ’em!).  The American Association solicited more fans than the National League by playing on Sundays, selling beer and charging 25 cents instead of 50 cents for tickets.  Baseball just became more affordable to a broader class of fans.  Maybe present day baseball can learn from some of its past history!

The Sports Archives – How To Bowl A 200+ Average!

Bowling scoreThe perfect bowling score is 300, but meeting this score is quite impossible even for professional and highly experienced bowlers. Now an average of 200+ is another story. Bowlers who get 200+ receive  admiration from fellow bowlers and are also feared by their opponents. It may be elusive and difficult to achieve for beginning bowlers, but it can be done with enough practice—and knowledge of the secrets to having a good game of bowling.

I’m sure most people will tell you that practice makes perfect, so although that’s a practical and correct advice, I’m not going to reiterate that for you. What you need to learn are the scoring factors, which will help you take advantage of your strikes and spares.

Pick up spares

You may be making a number of strikes in every round, but then you struggle when it comes to certain spares. Now, getting those spares are essential if you want to achieve that 200-point bowling average. A spare (also known as half-strike) indicates that all of the pins have been knocked down after the second ball of a frame. You will see a slash mark (/) on the screen to denote a spare. Getting a spare means you are awarded 10 points, in addition to a bonus of whatever is scored with your next ball. Remember that only the first ball is counted.

Example:

Bowlspare

Frame 1, ball 1: 7 pins

Frame 1, ball 2: 3 pins (spare)

Frame 2, ball 1: 4 pins

Frame 2, ball 2: 2 pins

The score for these throws is: 7 + 3 + 4 (bonus) + 4 + 2 = 20 points

Let’s say you bowl a spare in the tenth and final frame; then you are awarded one extra ball to allow for the bonus points. So make sure to get a lot of practice on how to pick up your spares and reap the benefits!

Know the lane

Besides the spares, you also have to understand the difference when the lanes change. Different bowling houses and changing of oil patterns can affect how your ball rolls. Many passionate bowlers have two or more bowling balls that they use in games. Some bowlers use different balls for their first shot, their pocket or strike ball, and the spares. This is not to say that you have to purchase different balls to throw a good game. You just have to get to know the lane and how you bowl and understand how your bowling ball works in different conditions.

Bowling

Care for your ball.

Another tip is to maintain your bowling ball in a great shape. Bowling balls do experience wear-and-tear overtime and it will develop oil patterns and grooves. Clean your ball after each game or wipe it after each shot with a rag. Take it to a bowling store to keep it in tip-top shape.  While shopping, invest in some hammer bowling jerseys.

Be knowledgeable.

Finally, read and adjust to lane conditions and changes. If you can find a good bowling coach, the better, so you can read and adjust to the different changes that happen during a league or tournament.

So are you ready to achieve 200+? With enough practice and determination, you will reach that score and make your opponents bite your dust!

The Sports Archives – Bag More Ducks By Avoiding Bad Shooting Habits!

Duck HuntingMany hunters standing in cold deep brush peer through leafy branches from inside a makeshift blind, waiting for hours with the taste of roast duck in the back of their minds. As they wait to take their shot, they may see their “dinner” out in the distance well beyond the range of the shotgun.

As the birds begin descending through the canopy they can quickly make their way to a location within range. Once a group of ducks enters the ideal pattern of the shooters’ guns, the hunters will quickly begin firing away. Missing the first shot, they will re-aim and fire twice more. Only then do they realize they have succumbed to bad shooting habits, missing their target all three times.

Correcting through Self-Analysis

Through self-analysis there is an effective way to understand exactly what went wrong. More than likely, they are a victim of one of the following bad shooting habits. These bad habits include:

  • Shooting the Wrong Gun – There is nothing worse than going hunting with a poor-fitting gun. Just because it was expensive, or seems to fit well in the hands, the hunter might not have the physical characteristics for that specific gun to create the most successful results.  Having the right gun info at your disposal will help you find a firearm that fits you just right. The best gun is one that becomes a logical extension of your body, not something that is clunky and difficult to operate, because this will distract you from the task at hand.

A properly fitting shotgun will feel comfortable and mount to the shoulder easily. It will feel as though it is an extension of the hunter’s arm. An easy solution for determining if the gun is a proper fit is to take the unloaded shotgun and select an imaginary target at a range of 10 to 15 feet away. Without closing either eye, take an imaginary shot quickly. Next, close one eye and focus while looking down the barrel. If the gun’s sight is relatively on target the gun is likely as close to fit as possible.

The Sports Archives – Tarnished Glory: Alex Rodriguez’s Doping Mess!

Yankees Baseball

Perfection is perfectly simple; fouling things up requires true skill.

~ Douglas Horton

Mistakes are part of the human experience, and we all make more than a few along the rocky and sometimes elusive path to maturity. The trick is, of course, to learn from them, which most of us do. Some errors, however, have repercussions as severe as avalanches, smothering dreams, expectations, salaries and personal reputations.

Strike 3 Y’er Out

Yankee star, Alex Rodriguez, is not the first athlete to fall from grace and he certainly won’t be the last. Standing in the same shameful shoes are, among others: National League MVP Ryan Braun, who was suspended from the Milwaukee Brewers for drug violations; and biker, Lance Armstrong, who was stripped of his seven Tour de France medals for similar doping offenses.

A three-time American League Most Valuable Player, this talented athlete may well face a suspension throughout the 2014 season due to his connections to the now defunct Biogenesis clinic in Florida which supplied him with performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). Legally, the nature of his suspension and his current contract present some sticky issues.

The Sports Archives – Real Madrid: The Story Behind The Famous Brand!

Real Madrid football club is a good example of how an organisation has succeeded in developing a valuable resource – its brand. From this, it has developed a strategy that has managed to promote it and maximise its potential.

Real Madrid - APOEL (4)This valuable resource is in itself a result of Real Madrid club’s own set of resources. An important resource has been the players who have passed through the dressing room, helping to influence the current club, its corporate culture and its tradition of success generated throughout its history. The brand Real Madrid already had significant value. The main contribution of the management model applied by President Florentino Perez, was first to value the brand, giving it increasing value and then finding various channels to monetise it. This has helped to achieve a competitive advantage over other clubs, enabling the growth and diversification of the club’s activities centred on the main football theme.

The Sports Archives – Legal Consequences Of Running Onto A Sports Field!

Running onto the Field

Running onto a sports field, also known as rushing the field, pitch invasion or field invasion, occurs which a spectator crosses onto the playing area during a sporting event. While this act may be entertaining for other fans in the stadium or those watching the game from home, it can carry serious consequences for the offender.

Ejection

At a minimum, a person who runs onto a sports field is almost certain to be ejected from the stadium. When someone is ejected from a game, the cost of the entrance ticket cannot be recovered. In cases where the offense is more serious or causes a greater amount of damages, the actor may face civil or criminal charges, since rushing the field could fall within the categories of trespass and criminal mischief.

The Sports Archives – Klim’s Korner: LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan

Lebron James Archives
Michael Jordan

They are the two most iconic basketball superstars ever to walk on a court but when it comes to who is the greatest, its always up for debate. LeBron James or Michael Jordan.  A lot of the older sports fans who saw Jordan actually play will name him as the greatest of all time. I thought this way as well but after watching an interview of Scottie Pippin on ESPN Radio’s Mike and Mike Show in May of 2011, I re-assessed my thoughts. I am paraphrasing Pippen but he spoke that Jordan may be the greatest scorer of all time, however, LeBron might be the best all around player. I was surprised, but after LeBron won his first title, I started to see the LeBron side of the argument.

Like most American sports fans I was privileged to watch game 6 of the NBA finals this year and I was blown away by the performance of LeBron James. I have watched him before and he is indescribably good to start but at the same time I have never seen him just get the killer look in his eye and take over a game. It was absolutely amazing. The argument against LeBron was that he was not a clutch player and that he would rather just pass it. In game 6, I saw him hit a 3-pointer, then get the ball right back and knock another one down with under 30 seconds to go.   As game 7 was winding down and San Antonio still in the game, the Heat needed a bucket to close the deal. What happens next blew me away as LeBron gets the ball, steps up and drains a 19 or 20 footer in a defenders face to seal it.  If that’s not clutch I don’t know what is!
