The Sports Archives – Tips For High School Wrestlers!

Wrestling is a sport that requires a great deal of physical training and conditioning. Athletes must balance various objectives, such as remaining within their weight class while properly fueling their bodies for the upcoming matches. Fortunately, there are several things they can do to help keep their bodies healthy and well maintained.

Eating Properly

Wrestlers should make sure to have a balanced diet throughout their training. No one food has all the nutrients a wrestler needs to succeed, so the diet should be varied. It is a good idea to eat a diet high in fruits and vegetables, since these foods carry so much nutrient content. They also provide a great deal of fiber. Foods such as baked potatoes are excellent sources of complex carbohydrates, and should be eaten frequently. The key is to not load the potato down with unnecessary and unhealthy condiments, such as sour cream. Good sources of protein, such as egg whites are also important. The Sports Archives – Iditarod Sled Race: The Last Great Race On Earth!

Iditarod in Anchorage, Alaska

Starting from Anchorage every March and ending 8 to 15 days later in Nome Alaska, the Iditarod is one of the greatest endurance tests in sport, with competitors mushing sled dogs across 1,150 miles of snow and ice in temperatures as low as 60 degrees Fahrenheit below zero.

It is Alaska’s largest spectator sport, and a few things celebrate the pioneering spirit of the United States 49th state much better than this. The trail is now a National Historic Trail, the Iditarod began as a mail and supply route for miners. It winds across frozen rivers and desolate tundra, through dense forest and along miles of wind-swept coast from Seward, near Anchorage, to Nome, on the Western Bering Sea coast. In 1925, part of the Iditarod Trail became a life-saving highway for epidemic-stricken Nome. Diphtheria raged, and serum had to be brought in by intrepid mushers and their hard-driving dogs. In commemoration of those heroic feats, the route was turned into a race course in 1973, and today mushers come from as far away as Japan and Norway to compete for a share of the $600,000 prize.

Skin Safety

Whichever snorkeling spot you pick, the likelihood is that it is going to be in a sunny location where you are going to be exposed to the sun’s rays for a long amount of time. Remember your skin safety when out on the water and apply high SPF sun block before you begin. To protect your skin all over, you might like to opt for a t-shirt over your swimwear or even a wetsuit which will keep your body at a nice temperature as well as protect you from painful sunburn.

The Sports Archives – No Women Allowed!

18th green and clubhouseWe are in the 21st century and have numerous laws to ensure equality for women. It is all too easy to think that we have arrived at a period in history when the female of our species has finally achieved a level playing field but sadly that is not the case. I think we all know that women are under-represented at a senior level in the workplace and that they largely earn less money than men. That is a complicated issue which you could debate for hours but there is one area of discrimination in the UK which is much more cut and dried and that is private clubs.

The Sports Archives – Back To Reality: What Do Elite Athletes Do When They Retire?

Professional sporting careers don’t last long. Sportsmen and women dedicate their formative years to training, training, training, have a few years in the limelight and then… exactly! Then what? The transition from elite athlete to retiree can be demoralising and tough – so much so that Oxford Brookes University has set up a programme to help former athletes through the difficult times they often experience as their careers come to an end.

Thankfully, the world has changed since the retirement of one of the world’s most famous gold medallists, Jesse Owens. Owens was a thorn in Hitler’s side: the black athlete who defeated the Nazis’ Aryan super-men. However, when he returned home to the segregated US, Owens wasn’t even allowed to sit at the front of a bus. After being forced out of athletics, he drifted from job to job and eventually filed for bankruptcy. He wasn’t officially recognised by his country for four decades after the 1936 Olympics.
