Always delivering excitement and thrills at pretty high speeds, the competition has seen many an iconic driver in many an iconic model. And these rally variants went on to lead the drivers and their teams to championships. Since the championship began back in 1973, the likes of Citroen, Peugeot, Lancia, Toyota, Subaru, Ford, Volkswagen, Audi, Fiat and Mitsubishi have all experienced success in the manufacturer’s competition alone.

Really, you could talk for hours and hours about the cars and the drivers that have competed in the WRC. However, for the purpose of a digestible blog, we’ve picked out just four of our favourites from the past 15-years.

The Sports Archives – Ancient Egyptian Sports!

Many people don’t realize how much our modern way of living has in common with ancient societies We’re not talking about identical lifestyles but there are obvious similarities within the time frame of about 5, 000 years. Sure, they weren’t producing and processing as much information as we do today, but the way they lived, their entertainment and even some of their sports were almost the same as the ones we know and love today. When you say “Ancient Egyptian sports” most people don’t really know what to think, even though the truth is much closer to “boxing and running” than you might think. In fact, the basis of many modern sports lie in Ancient Egypt.

Boxing

Early BoxingAccording to historians, boxing was an organized sport even in those days and athletes were awarded great honors for entering the competitions. Sometimes even the Pharaoh, himself, as well as his heir would spectate the bloody exhibitions. Unlike today’s boxing, there were no protective gloves to shield boxers’ hands from the damage that hitting another human being in the head deals. Also, since they didn’t have television, I would assume that the sport didn’t involve that much taunting between competitors and was significantly more focused on the actual fights. The techniques and fighting styles athletes used are unknown but from what we can see in hieroglyphs, it wasn’t much different from what we see on the 50” inch flat screen today.

The Sports Archives – The Positive Effects Of World Sporting Events!

The Olympic Games

How long did it take for the ballyhoo of the Summer 2012 Olympic Games to die down? Days, weeks, months? It seems us Brits were all still talking and reminiscing about it well into 2013, whether we actually went to one of the events or not. The atmosphere was electric enough for the whole country to feel its force.

In a subsequent public government report of the big event, Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, called it a “sporting legacy, with 150,000 more Londoners trying some kind of sporting activity since the Games”.

The surprising success, perhaps more so thanks to some excellent Channel 4 TV coverage, was the two weeks towards the end of summer where we witnessed the amazing athletes strut their stuff in the relatively unknown Paralympic Games.

The stories behind each of their personal battles to greatness, overcoming debilitating physical and sometimes mental conditions, was truly inspiring. This had an unbelievable domino-style effect on adults and children from all walks of life who took it upon themselves to realise their potential, without fear of failure or embarrassment. The shift from regular household sporting names such as David Beckham or Usain Bolt suddenly changed to the young British swimmer Ellie Simmonds, and South African double-amputee Oscar Pistorius, for their undeniable struggle for ultimate success.
