The Sports Archives – What You Need For Your First Fishing Trip!

Fishing is one of the most relaxing and addictive sports known to man. There is nothing better than setting up your rod and line, sitting back in your folding chair and sipping from your flask of hot tea while you wait for the fishes to come to you. It’s a chance for you to sit with nature, day or night, and get some peace and quiet, and time away from your busy life. If you’ve never tried it before perhaps now is the time?

You don’t need much to get started – just a few bits of equipment and some basic knowledge. You’ll learn along the way too – both from your own experience and from that of fellow fishermen so don’t worry that you’re not an expert just yet. You’ll find that other fishermen are really happy to pass on their tips so get talking to them – you’ll pick up a lot. Here are the basics that you need to get started:

Rod and Line

Obviously you’ll need a rod and line but it’s important that you choose good quality ones. A cheap rod will break and flex too easily, and a cheap line will just snap off. It will frustrate you and you’ll end up paying twice as much again so get good gear from the start. Choose brand names that you recognise and trust. You’ll also need a reel.   Again – it’s better to choose a robust good quality one that won’t let you down when the fish have a bite! You can get left or right-handed ones so make sure you get the right one for you.

Tackle Box and Tackle

You’ll need somewhere to keep your equipment and a good tackle box will do the job. You’ll also need room in there for some bait. It’s good to have a few boxes within the box so that you can separate your weights, spinners and hooks. Ask an expert at the fishing shop and they will show you exactly what you need in terms of tackle and bait to get started. Make sure you pick up a multi-purpose knife as you’ll need tools for all sorts of jobs.

A Licence

Depending on where you are fishing you may need to get hold of a licence to fish. Ask in your local area and find out what the rules are so that you don’t end up in trouble. Getting a licence is easy enough though you may need to pay for it. Make sure you get this sorted before you go fishing for the first time.

Suitable Clothing

Bear in mind that you may get too hot or too cold when you’re fishing so make sure you take some extra layers with you wherever you go. You’ll also need some good quality boots and some waterproofs. A hat and gloves will also come in handy.

Once you’re all kitted out the head off to the river and cast your line! The only thing left to do is to go home proudly with your catch for dinner!
