The Sports Archives – Top Innovations In The Motocross Industry!

Antonio Cairoli Motocross

It’s not until you look back at footage from years gone by that you realise just how much the technology of sport has advanced. It’s not so long ago that athletes ran on cinder tracks and there was no such thing as research into improvements for bikes or other sporting equipment. Nowadays though sport is big business, and some of the technological advancements which help the likes of Usain Bolt stay at the top of his game filter down to those of us who take part in sport on a more casual level. One of the sports with the highest investment in advancements is motocross.

The Sports Archives – The 3 Best MLB Parks for Kids!

Petco Park, San Diego California:

Perhaps more than any other major league baseball park, Petco was designed with families in mind.  From the grassy knoll outside of center field which has ample place for blankets (with a view of virtually the entire playing field with the exception of the left field line) a playground and a miniature baseball diamond to a beach area where kids can play in the sand; there are a number of areas for children to play while at Petco Park.  While other parks have attempted to give older kids a place to stretch their legs, San Diego’s Petco Park adds the beach and grass to those standard amenities.

Those additions when combined with the largest concourses in MLB, make Petco Park the jewel among MLB stadiums if you have young children.  Park of the reason for that is simple, San Diego doesn’t have a large corporate base, so the team is dependent on season ticket holders, but additionally the team took public money to help build Petco Park so a section of the outfield also functions as a public playground during non game times. It’s also a lot easier to stomach a trip to Petco based on the $5 standing room tickets that are readily available (bring your blanket, sit on the grass!).

The Sports Archives – Rugby Shirts

Rugby

The Rugby shirt first appeared in the 1800s when rugby as a game started to kick off and someone had the bright idea that they needed a way to tell the teams apart. Especially since the earliest uniforms were white trousers with a shirt and bow tie, which may not be seen as the best uniform for a game like rugby. So work started on a more practical uniform which would suit the rough and tumble nature of rugby as well as allowing the players to be comfortable and protected whilst being wearable in both good and bad weather without affecting the player’s game too drastically.

The Sports Archives – Klim’s Korner: 2013 NFL Picks!

The 2013 NFL Football season is almost here and to be honest I have not been this excited for the season in a long time. Maybe it’s because of how the last year ended with almost every playoff game coming down to the last play, and not to mention that I could see at least 3 teams in every division making this year’s playoffs. Here are my picks for the season.

AFC EAST:

Miami Dolphins 11-5.

I think this is the year for the Dolphins as the Jets and the Bills are not real threats and there’s too much whole drama in New England. Not to mention loading up their defense with fresh faces like Philip Wheeler, Dannell Ellerbe, Dion Jordan and Brett Grimes. They have new weapons like Dustin Keller and Mike Wallace for quarterback Ryan Tannehill.

The Sports Archives – Rugby Boots

Rugby URBA Finals

They initially made only one change which was that there were bars nailed across the soles so that they could keep some form of grip on the grass and mud when running. The first actual rule concerning the rugby boot was put into place in 1845. This rule read, “No player may wear projecting nails or iron plates on the heels or soles of his shoes or boots.” This was because men would often kick each other in the shins in order to gain advantage over the other players. Of course this rule was not very strictly adhered to and some would take their boots to cobblers to have the front of them sharpened slightly.

It was not till the end of the 19th century that official rugby boots were manufactured and sold to the public. These boots were very similar in shape, style, and sturdiness to the walking boots usually worn by the players however there were leather studs placed on the soles of the shoes for better grip. After this improvement, there were few more until the 1960s, up until this point the only thing about the rugby boot that had altered was the quality of the leather, which had improved.

After this, larger sporting goods companies began to produce boots which featured a set of screw-in metal studs.

The Sports Archives – Redefining Urban Adventure: Rafting The LA River!

Los Angeles River

The Los Angeles River has gone from a moody giant, destroying homes with devastating floods to a wholly tamed force of nature, confined to a concrete tomb that would make John McPhee proud. It has played host to car chases, shootouts both cinematic and brutally real, as well as putrid sewage and a healthy amount of graffiti. Now, after years of confinement and abuse, the Los Angeles River is host to open to rafters, kayakers, and fishermen.

The Sports Archives – Memorable Moments From The World’s Best Cricket Grounds!

Cricket is played everywhere from back yards to village greens to superb stadia. These are among the world’s finest grounds and some of the memorable occasions they have seen.

Lords, London

Lord's Cricket Ground

Located in St John’s Wood in London, Lords is the ‘home of cricket’ and is where every international cricketer dreams of playing well enough to get their name on the honours boards that commemorate players who have scored a century or taken five wickets in an innings in a test at the ground. The present ground is the third. It is named after businessman Thomas Lord who staged a match at the first ground in 1787. The first match at the present ground was played in 1814 and the first international – a test against Australia – was played in 1884.

One of England’s fondest memories of Lords, is the 2009 Ashes test, when captain Andrew Strauss made 161 in the first innings setting up England’s first win over Australia at the ground since 1934.
